Healthcare facilities such as clinics, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and freezer storage units are all under an immense amount of pressure these days to maintain safety, wherever possible. One facet of maintaining such safety is ensuring doors are only opened or closed whenever absolutely necessary. We know, this sounds like a simple task. However, taking a further look into the healthcare sector, and what it means to maintain safety standards will outline just how important it is to monitor open and closed doors in many elements.
In a hospital setting, healthcare clinic, or long-term care facility, it is imperative that patients and staff alike stay in their designated areas, to avoid any mishaps. If a patient has a condition that may make them lightheaded or confused, or considered a fall risk, it’s imperative to know when their door might open in case they try to exit. This could lead to unintended falls, or even a lockdown of a hospital if a patient cannot be located. Also, staff members such as environmental services must know that their service doors are closed (and perhaps locked) so that patients or visitors don’t mistakenly wander into a room they shouldn’t have access to, due to the nature of cleaners and chemicals being used to disinfect such a facility. Nutritional services is another department within a hospital setting/healthcare facility that would also require open/close door monitoring. There are many freezers and coolers holding ample amounts of food required for both patient’s needs, as well as staff. If a freezer or cooler door were to be left open, it could mean spoiled food for an entire population of patients and healthcare workers – resulting in thousands of dollars of lost goods. This type of loss also trickles down to the supply chain – it could take some time to restock lost inventory, resulting in shortages for the entire hospital, and probably overtime for quick restocking purposes.
Vaccine and prescription coolers and freezers are of huge concern to monitor open and closed door conditions. Covid-19 vaccines are generally stored in an ultra-cold freezer between -90°C and -60°C (-130°F and -76°F). If it were determined that a freezer door were open for an extended period of time, these vaccines would not be permissible for use.
