How can this help maintain machine health, and ultimately save time, resources, and repair costs?
Temperature – Temperature monitoring is an imperative part of maintaining machine health. Motors for example, need to maintain a cool enough temperature to operate safely. If the temperature on a motor increases to an unsafe level, this could cause harm to the motor, and also cause a reduction in current efficiency. While monitoring temperature for machine health, the root cause analysis can be determined by using IoT Predictive Maintenance Sensors, and Ubidots IoT Applications Cloud Platform.
Vibration – Monitoring vibration to maintain machine health is also a crucial aspect of machine health. If a large motor or machine has too high a level of vibration (velocity and displacement) it could cause harm to the machine. By monitoring the level of vibration a machine is operating at, the user can ensure a proper measurement at a safe distance from the factory floor.
Current– A sizable resource from a facility’s assets, is current. When there is an immense amount of current being produced, the likelihood of malfunction increases. Monitoring the amount of current that is being produced from one’s machine will allow proper root cause analysis to be determined.
In the past, factories may have had to call a vibration analyst, should something have gone awry. At this point, the analyst will manually inspect and measure vibration on each machine. The biggest drawback of such monitoring, is that there is a long gap between each two measurements. The failure, and when the analyst is able to take said measurements. There is effectively no way to know if something starts to break or malfunction during this gap period. Using the IoT Vibration Sensor, users can perform condition monitoring on a continuous basis. Using the data, users can see trends and use these to make an informed decision as to whether or not the machine needs major repair. By doing this, factories can avoid unnecessary downtime and high repair costs. This is just one of the key advantages of using IoT Vibration Sensors.
So, you’ve received your IoT Sensor from NCD, and have installed the product. Now what? Once you have the physical Sensor installed, it’s time to start collecting data!
NCD IoT Sensors can be used with an IoT Edge Computer Gateway Device (highly recommended) which receives data wirelessly, and sends this data to a Cloud Service (like UbiDots), and can also be sent via Ethernet, Wifi, or Cellular Network. The IoT Edge Gateway can support +/- 50 Sensors in one installation, depending on how often the sensors are set to report data. Take a look at the IoT Edge Computer Gateway here!
The IoT Edge Gateway runs the Node-Red program, which tells the Gateway what to do with the data it receives. Alternately, users do not have to use the IoT Edge Computer. NCD offers wireless modems, as well that can be used via USB, Ethernet, Wifi, RS45, and RS232. The modems receive information from wireless sensors and transfer the data to the user’s PC. Node-Red and NCD’s ncd-red-wireless library can then run on the user’s PC.
*Node-Red Interface is configured with a flow editor, and is preinstalled on the IoT Edge Computer. If the user is running Node-Red on a PC, Node-Red and the ncd-red-wireless library will need to be installed. To begin with Ubidots, open a 30-day free trial account using this link. https://industrial.ubidots.com/accounts/signup_industrial/. Once your account is set up, you may begin using Ubidots and the Node Red Program to start collecting data samples.

Once you’ve connected to Ubidots, you’ll go to the menu at the top of the page and choose Devices>Devices. At this point you can search your device in the search bar, or identify the address of your device. (You may also rename the device so that you may identify which sensor is transmitting data from a certain asset or room.)
Once you’ve identified which device you’d like samples (or readings) from, you can go to the Menu Bar, click Data>Dashboards. Now, you will be able to view a full dashboard of your chosen data derivatives, and consistently be in-the-know when it comes to the information you need.
